About Studio-SB
The studio is located in the city of Baar, ZG in the former Lego factory.
I am, who I am. I hate posing for photos, so all pictures of me are stolen shots, except for my scrum master profile picture.
Studio SB is a one-person design and making practice based in the canton of Zug, Switzerland.
My foundation is in classical painting, where I trained as a protégé under Federico Aguilar Alcuaz. That studio training shaped how I think about composition, structure, and the quiet discipline of working with materials.
Before establishing the studio, I worked in graphic design and education. Today my work sits between these worlds—classical artistic thinking combined with contemporary digital tools and modern fabrication processes.
The studio currently works primarily with leather and silk. Materials are chosen for their integrity and their ability to age with use rather than remain static. Some silks are hand-painted directly in the studio, allowing each object to carry a direct artistic gesture.
My relationship with leather began in childhood during a visit to a saddler’s workshop with my grandfather. Watching leather being shaped for a working saddle left a lasting impression: materials made to be used, repaired, and lived with.
Studio SB continues that philosophy. Objects are developed through careful prototyping and produced in small series within the studio. Material combinations are never repeated, allowing each piece to exist as its own composition.
This work is not about luxury or trends.
It is about making useful objects with patience, respect for materials, and the belief that everyday tools can carry the presence of art.
Leather is a complex material. I personally choose not to consume mammal meat, yet I work with leather because it already exists as a byproduct of the food industry.
Rather than allowing this material to become waste, I prefer to transform it into objects designed to last for decades. For me, this approach acknowledges the reality of the material while attempting to honor it through careful use and longevity.
Leather’s durability and ability to age gracefully allow it to remain in use far longer than many synthetic alternatives. In the studio, the goal is simple: if a material already exists, it should be used thoughtfully and well.
Working with leather means accepting the responsibility that comes with it.
Studio-SB objects emerge through an extended process of design, prototyping, and refinement. During this evolution, a form may appear only a small number of times before the studio moves forward to the next iteration.
While the underlying structure of a design may briefly reappear during this development phase, material compositions are never repeated. Each object therefore belongs to the Studio-SB series, yet exists as its own individual composition—made once and never recreated in exactly the same way again.
No practice is perfect, but improvement is always possible. In the studio, I remain committed to continually searching for better materials and more sustainable approaches.
Part of this commitment involves actively exploring innovative alternatives to leather that align with my values of durability, safety, and craftsmanship.
Every material I consider must meet strict criteria: it should offer durability comparable to leather, be safe for laser cutting, and meet rigorous environmental and ethical standards. I have experimented with cork and other plant-based materials. While these alternatives show promise, none have yet met the standards required for my work.
As new developments emerge, I remain eager to revisit and test new materials. The goal is to identify solutions that maintain the quality and longevity my customers expect while continuing to push the boundaries of sustainability.
Through experimentation and adaptability, I believe it is possible to create a more thoughtful future for artisan goods and the environment.
